Until recently, the student housing market was known for its confined dorms that only provided the very basic amenities for students. Over the last 5 years, however, the landscape of the market has rapidly evolved, reflecting a shift in students’ attitudes towards luxury and purpose-built accommodation. With the cost of studying and living continuing to rise, the type of accommodation students choose can be critical to their financial and emotional wellbeing.

The student housing market is adjusting to a new era of modern students and this change is being reflected in the type of stock being built. According to Knight Franck the current trend is towards less expensive accommodation, with 62% of the units currently under construction categorised as cluster flats, with shared kitchens and lounge areas. The remaining 38% are studios, which typically command higher rents.

It's not just universities who are becoming more mindful of changing student's tastes and preferences, increasingly the government is encouraging students away from the private rented accomodation predominantly from big family sized homes and into PBSA due to the increasing housing shortage in the country. Students want to live in a fun, exciting, clean and vibrant environment and their parents are also supportivve of the PBSA due to the security it offers their children.
